Of the two teams that Penn State plays this year, Ohio State and Illinois have the best chance to knock of the Lions. Adam Rittenberg espn.com Big Ten blogger watched an Illinois practice. It is early on, but there are a few good things to take away from his report.

 “”It wasn’t all good for the passing attack, as the defensive backs made their presence known. Safety Bo Flowers picked off Williams and safety Garrett Edwards squeezed an Eddie McGee pass. Cornerback Miami Thomas, who doesn’t lack confidence, had two picks, bringing his camp total to five. Thomas told me he expects to have 10 picks by the end of camp.”"

This is good news for the Lions who will need to depend on their ability to get pressure on Juice Williams in order to come out on top. It is true that both teams have quite some time and many games to play before their showdown, but the early reports out of the Illinois camp are in the favor of the Lions. Another aspect to take into account is the Illinois defense, lots of people are focusing on the poweful wideout core Illinois has but the defense has several holes and issues to deal with. That’ll be discussed further in the Big Ten preview later on this month; but in a nutshell, if the defense can’t stop anybody it doesn’t matter what happens when you’ve got the ball. That was the problem with the Larry Johnson era teams. They were a good offensive team, but defense wins games.
